There are two main types of diabetes – type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 usually first presents in children or in young adults. Type 2 usually first presents in people over the age of 40 years and is often (though not always) associated with being overweight. However, type 2 diabetes is increasingly being diagnosed in children and in young adults.
Both types of diabetes can cause serious complications. With regular monitoring and good control of the raised blood sugars these can be significantly reduced. In addition to the treatment from healthcare professionals, it is very important for people with diabetes to understand their condition and be able to manage their diabetes.
As part of your Diabetic monitoring you will be contacted by SMS or letter in or to book an appointment with a member of the Nursing Team. At the appointment your height, weight and blood pressure will be recorded, you will have a blood test, and a foot examination. You will then be booked in for a follow up to discuss your blood test results.
It is recommended that some patients with Diabetes take medications such as a statin or an ACE Inhibitor. If you need to start either of these medications you will be contacted in order to make an appointment with one of our Clinical Pharmacists.
Please let us know if you are already under a Diabetic Specialist and we will ensure that you are not contacted to come to the Practice for your monitoring.
Patients with Diabetes are eligible to receive a flu vaccination annually during Influenza Vaccination Season. We will contact you when we start to accept bookings for this.
