Fit notes – anonymous data collection

Posted on February 22nd, 2018

Under section 254 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012 the Secretary of State has implemented a policy requiring a collection of data relating to eMED3 (fit notes, previously called “Sick Notes”). This will analyse the information relating to statement’s of fitness to work in an entirely anonymous way for the purpose of improving the monitoring of public health, commisioning and the quality of health services.

The anonymous information is being requested on behalf of the Department of Health and the Department of Work and Pensions in order to undertake research that will inform future policy relating to employment and absence, which will include an evalution of the Fit for Work programme.

Data will be automatically collected in February 2016 ( to include fit notes issued from December 2014) and ongoing until end August 2018, to be published in Spring 2016 and onwards.

If you have a query about the purpose of the collection and how the collected data will be used, please see the Department for Work and Pensions website
